I would say it's spoiler-safe :)

Directed by Korean director Park Chan-wook, critically acclaimed Oldboy is about Oh Dae-su, a man who has been locked in a hotel room for fifteen years and then suddenly released to find the reason for his captivity in five days. (That's where the name of the listing comes from- fifteen years to five days). This is a magnificent story about the devastation of revenge.
This movie is based on a Japanese manga by the same name, but they are actually two different stories. The controversy surrounding the film is something not found in the manga, and in all objectivity, most people say the manga is rather boring and subpar to the movie.
Oldboy is not for the faint of heart. It doesn't have much gore, but there are scenes that make you shudder and the big twist might be taboo to many. However, if you're willing to forgo comfort to watch a masterpiece, you won't be disappointed. Choi Min-sik (he plays the protagonist, Oh Dae-su) gives an amazing performance- his begging scene is one that is permanently etched into my mind, it was so devastastingly sad and powerful. Yoo Ji-tae (he plays the villain, Lee Woo-jin) also does exceptionally well- his portrayal of a handsome, rich, cold, and sadist character is one of the best I've seen. Kang Hye-jeong I'm more indifferent about, but let's just say they casted the perfect person, and I rather think it's something that will be hard to copy for the American remake.
Park Chan-wook's masterpiece is famous mostly for two things (there are of course many great aspects of this film, but there are two more famous examples): the one-take hallway fighting scene (incredible, really) and the twist. Don't just look up clips- seriously go watch this great film :) It's not without it's flaws and I would hardly call it a perfect movie, but it's edgy, hardcore, and devastating (how many times have I used that last adjective? lol).

My two cents on the remake...
Oldboy is in the works to be remade in America by Steven Spielberg. I don't know who will play who- only that Will Smith will be taking Oh Dae-su's character.
Okay. If you've seen the movie, then you know Will Smith is completely wrong. Completely. I like him and find him a decent actor, but even if I thought he was a really good one, this role is just not going to work correctly if he's the one in it. I don't think Edward Norton is right for the role either, but at least Norton has got the acting chops for it. Even Christian Bale (again, not right for the role) is up to the standards (if you've only seen his Batman movies, then you won't know what I'm talking about). Honestly, I could see Robert Downey Junior in the role.. maybe. I'm iffy about his acting but I think I see the look there...
Anyway, the point is the movie is probably going to be made. People who love the original film are in an uproar about it, and Smith's comment that the film is going to follow the manga as opposed to the movie seems like a load of BS. Perhaps they think this way they'll be able to avoid criticism and comparisons. Right.
Come (insert release month and year), expect a safe, commercial Oldboy remake :)

... Yeah I'll probably check it out though. I want to see how bad it is lol But if I were pleasantly surprised, I wouldn't lie about it :)
